Vintage VICTOR Wood Mallard Duck Decoy Hand Painted with Glass Eye 16\" Long. The Duck is Circa 40\'S. The Duck is missing on glass eye. The Duck has rough texture to it. The painting is very vivid and dark, with some scrapes. The Duck measures 16\" long X 5 3/4\" in height X 5\" wide. Very Cool piece. The Duck weighs 1 pound 12 ounces. The head has very slight movement to it. But, very well intact. The head seems to have been made like that. The end of the Duck\'s peek has a chip on the wood.HISTORY OF THE COMPANY:After World War I, the company introduced a line of wooden duck decoys.Thisfirst decoy line was made up of solidwooden decoys that were cold stamped“VICTOR” on their bottoms. And wereproduced from 1918 through 1938. TheVictor name became interchangeablewith the “Animal Trap” name whenreferring to their decoys. The Victordecoy was tuned on a duplicating latherand hand finished in three grades: #1, r#2and #12. The #1 Grade was left withrough groove marks left by the lathe’scutting blades and described asthe ‘feather finish’. #2 Grade was the same decoywith the grooves sanded to a smooth surface. #12 Grade wasthe economy decoy,which had a much thinner body with‘feather finish’.When William Pratt, Owner of the PrattManufacturing Company, Joliet, Illinoiswhich produced malleable iron productsand a decoy line, died his company wassold to the Joslyn Manufacturing andSupply Company in 1936. The JoslynCorporation liquidated the Pratt trap division in 1937 and decoy division in 1938to the Animal Trap Company. NowAnimal trap was on its way to establishing itself as a leader in the hunting decoybusiness. The Pratt purchase includedsamples of the Mason Decoy Company’sdecoys and patternsthat were acquired byWilliam Pratt before his death. Pratt’sdesign which hollowed a the duck decoyby drilled a large hole through the breastand capping the hole with a plug createda lighter decoy which was now marketedas the Seald-Air Model D-4 decoy. Thisdecoy line was offered in feather andsmooth finishes and included most common species of ducks; mallard, pintail,canvasback, bluebill, widgeon, teal, golden eye and coot.The purchase of the CumbestManufacturing Company was consolidated with the Animal Trap operations inPascagoula, Mississippi. The Cumbestcompany can be traced back the CharlesGrubbs (1848-1933), noted Illinois duckcall maker. Grubbs moved to Pascagoulain 1918 and started the GrubbsManufacturing Company, which produced his ’True-to-Life duck decoys.Pascagoula’s located on the river gaveGrubbs access to a natural abundance oftupelo gum and pop ash; two wood thatare extremely buoyant and light-weight.What will interest collectors is that it wasCharles Grubbs who initiated thePascagoula decoy productions continued
