Lillian M. Hollister was an early leader in the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, serving as Secretary, Vice-President and President and National Superintendent of Presenting the Temperance Cause to Influential Assemblies. (Source: “Sacramento Daily Union” Volume 98 Number 39 published 29 September 1889) At the request of Francis Willard, Hollister wrote the leaflet “Convention How?” In addition, she published “The Model Union”, “Manual of Parliamentary Terms and Procedures”, “Historical Sketch Concerning the International Council of Women and the National Council of Women of the United States of America” and “Second Presidential Memorandum”. She was a member of the Woman’s Press Association and numerous aid societies. The “Sacramento Daily Union” article noted above announced an October 3, 1899 reception for Lillian M. Hollister as well as some biographical information including “Recognizing the commanding influence of women in advancing the Interests of the church and of all her meritorious institutions, she has been slow j to favor women in politics, but has of . late become enthusiastic and shares the conviction now with women of j thought that the speediest and surest methods of reform will be found In the use of the ballot by women.” (sic)
Lillian M. Hollister was elected Ladies of the Maccabees of the World Supreme Commander of the Supreme Hive in May of 1895. (helps to date the celluloid pin)

In 1892 Bina M. West founded the Woman’s Benefit Association, one of the first fraternal benefit societies for women. She served as its chief executive for over 56 years. In addition to providing insurance, the WBA provided assistance, education and help to expand career, volunteer and social opportunities for women. She served as the Ladies of the Maccabees of the World in the 1890’s.
