Vintage, Circa 1920s,German, Marke Pehafra, 152 Casein Tiles, Mahjong Tile Set Only.

Casein is a plastic made from proteins found in milk. If you are not familiar with casein, it isslightly lighter in weight than Catalin, it has a wonderful soft feel.

Tile Set Description: . 152 vintage, circa 1923-25, beautifully embossed,German made, Marke Pehafra casein tiles. Wonderful graphics on this set. These tiles are in good vintage condition, tiles have wear, sometiles with paint loss. A five bambootile has a small chip on the tile face; there is a tile with a tiny dark spotin the corner and there is one tile with a few tinyindentationson the backside. Some tiles have randommarks or stains, the tile backs show some expected wear consistent with normalplay use including some scratches. Thesetiles have been cleaned with a mild natural cleanser; there are remainingfinger smudges on tile backs. All of thewhite dragons have been replaced. Pleaseblow up the images and look carefully. Tilemeasurement is an approximation, the tiles vary slightly in size, this isnormal to the set. Eight added tiles forjokers are stickered with Charli’s wonderful “Vase” stickers. Tile measurement: approximately 1 ¼ x 7/8x 5/16 inches.. 152 piece complete tile set o 36 Dot tiles, 4 each of 1-9. o 36 Bamboo tiles, 4 each of 1-9o 36 Character (Crack) tiles, 4 each of 1-9o 16 Wind tiles: 4 each of East, North, West and Southo 12 Dragon tiles: 4 each of White, Red and Green o 8 Flowers: 2 complete bouquets, 1-4

It was not manufactured utilizingmodern technology with precision controls and exact results. Pieces and partswere in many cases made by hand, up to 90 years ago. There may be somevariation in color and/or size as well as manufacturing artifacts or remnantssuch as surface cracking, scratches or flea bites in the Catalin, Bakelite,resin, Celluloid, Lucite, or other plastics as the material cooled. Chips andflea bites may be a result of materials used as fillers in the plastics or howthe set was played with or stored. There may also be variation in the paintcolors from suit to suit if the set tiles were painted at different times usingdifferent batches of paint.Some tiles are made from more than one type of materials. Some of the pieces ofa tile may shrink differently than others and over time the tile components mayseparate. Game tiles may also separate during normal play. If the piecesseparate, a simple tacky, water clean-up, crafter\'s glue will work nicely toreattach the pieces. On rare occasion, pieces may separate during shipping. Iwill not pack a sold set with separated tiles. If the set arrives withseparated tiles they can be easily repaired as outlined above. Separated tiles are not in and of themselves reason to return aset as the repair is both simple and quick.The wood, bone and bamboo pieces may not all match perfectly in size, as mostwere carved, crafted and assembled by hand. This also includes the woodenstorage boxes. In an effort to get the product to market quickly, many of thevintage wooden boxes were made with green wood. As the wood dried, it may havesplit, shrunk or cracked in places. This is what makes the sets vintage andunique and brings the wonderful character and charm that makes mahjong sets sovery popular. Vintage sets are unique in that they bear the maker\'s personaltouch.Vintage metal will show its age and character. The money holders, case locksand other metal components may have an uneven patina, spots of oxidation ornormal use wear associated with age. Additionally, if dissimilar metals wereused to make the parts, there will be areas of galvanic corrosion where the twometal types are joined.If you are expecting that all of the pieces match in size and color exactlythen you probably do not want a vintage set.
