Vtg 1930s CORNING Machine Age Art Deco CERISE Pink LANTERN Pre-WW2 Xmas Ornament

*+* STEUBEN DESIGN ~ SUPER RARE ART DECO SHAPE! *+*

DESCRIPTION:
This is an extremely early Corning Glass Works stylized LANTERN Christmas ornament, inspired by the large Deco boulevard and street lamp-post lanterns used during the 1920s-30s. It is lightly silvered andcovered in an unusual deep cerise pinky-red lacquer.

These \'Fancy Shapes\' Corning ornaments were produced at the start of WWII in Europe, when imported European ornaments were no longer available in the United States. This shape is among some of the earliest American Christmas ornaments developed by Corning. Designers from Corning\'s Steuben art glass division developed the industrial-inspired shapes for their new Christmas ornament venture. According to Corning Glass, Frederick Carder himself designed several of these early ornament shapes!

Line drawing of this ornament from a 1941 Corning Christmas Tree Ornament salesman\'s sheet.

These early Corning ornaments were completely new and modern and did not rely on old European (particularly German) Christmas Ornament styles for inspiration. These new Corning ornaments completely symbolized Americanism, Patriotism and the American Ideal.

The early \'Industrial Deco\' shapes were developed during 1938-1939, when Corning was just applying their light bulb technology to the manufacture of Christmas tree ornaments. By the early 1940s, several of these early Industrial Deco designs were discontinued in favor of the \'Shiny-Brite\' style of simpler reflectors, spheres and pendants.

In addition to their own brand of Christmas ornaments, by 1940, Corning was producing all the ornament blanks for Shiny Brite, Santa Heim, Coby, Doubl-Glo, and Santa Novelties - these companies simply decorated the Corning-manufactured blanks and sold them as their own brands, they did not manufacture any of the glass themselves.

This ornament measures 1 3/4\" diameter at the widest, 2 1/8\" high from the bottom to the shoulder and 2 3/8\" to top of the cap.

CONDITION:
~ is very good for such an early ornament ~ no chips, cracks or damage to the glass! The earlycerise lacquer is nice and heavy, but does exhibit some color misses and minor wear, as shown in our photos. This ornament is fitted with Corning\'s typical \"Made in U.S. of A.\" lobed steel cap. The steel cap shows a bit of oxidation.
