This vintage basket handbag was made by Caro-Nan, two women...Nancy Steele and Carolyn McDaniel from Jackson Mississippi. They started making these unique purses in the mid 1960s, painting wooden baskets to create personalized handbags for friends. The pair soon started selling their Caro-Nan purses at local boutiques, then at small shops around the United States. These hand-decorated custom bags became a popular and collectible fashion accessory.This one is a floral motif, with vibrant flowers on top & front. An earlier bag, as most of the Caro-Nan bags that followed featured scenes of local buildings and attractions of a particular area.The handbag measures 10 inches across the handles. It\'s 6\" inches high to the lid. Front back is 5-1/2\". Inside is quilted with red floral printed fabric; there is a mirror inside lid. Signed \"Benoits\" & \"by Caro-Nan\". The basket is stained brown. Excellent condition.
