The Severnaya Chern factory of Veliky Ustyug is aunique enterprise of national craftsmanship, formed in the town of Veliky Ustyug in the seventeenth century. Over the past,three hundred years, it has been preserving and developing the traditions ofthe ancient silver blackening craft (Neillo), unparalleled in the modernjewelry.

Niello is a deep black metal mixture that is fusedonto metal for decorative effect. Though worked on three-dimensional objects,the effect might be considered graphic because it relies primarily on shape andpattern. The contrast of the lustrous black inlay against either matte orpolished metal is striking and has earned niello a special place in the arsenalof decorative techniques.
