The house operated several high end boutiques that were set up like department stores. The stores sold accessories, clothing (sportswear, elegant knitwear, silk blouses etc.), objects, and gifts from 1800 – 1960s. The house based in Paris, France opened many shops throughout France. In 1938 the house opened a shop in New York City and for that purpose Henry a la Pensee, Inc., a New York corporation was formed. From United States Court of Customs and Patent Appeals documents dated April 10, 1957, Patent Appeal No. 6226. :“Beginning in 1940, as a result of the war in Europe and after the sinking of the steamship Champlain, the New York company was unable to obtain goods from France, and accordingly began to market goods of its own using labels bearing the words “Henry a la Pensee, Inc.,” with “Inc.” in relatively small letters, and this it continued to do. Prior to that time, it would appear that the labels on the goods sold by the New York company, being imported from the French company, read “Henry a la Pensee, Paris” and that after 1940 they read “Henry a la Pensee, Inc.” when used on merchandise otherwise obtained.”***Jacques Esterel (1918-1974) was working as an engineer and designer of machine tools when he visited the home of Louis Féraud and was inspired to try his hand at fashion. He founded Creations Jacques Esterel in 1953, but due to his inexperience it was not until 1958 that the label really was launched. A year later, his creation of the wedding dress of French actress Brigitte Bardot helped establish his name in the fashion world.Esterel continued to design until his death in 1974. After that time the label was kept going by his wife and daughter. In 1985 they were involved in a high profile lawsuit in which they charged Yves Saint Laurent with copying a famous Esterel design. They lost their criminal suit, but won in civil court.***(1936 – 2008) Yves St. Laurent went to Paris at age 17 to find work in fashion. He was soon hired by Christian Dior as an assistant. They worked together for several years, and when Dior died in 1957, St. Laurent was made the head designer. His first collection, Spring 1958, was called the Trapeeze, and was an immediate hit.But subsequent collections were not so well received, and when Laurent returned to Paris after a brief time in the army, he found that he had been replaced at Dior by Marc Bohan. In 1962 he opened his own couture house. Rive Gauche, his ready-to-wear line, was established in 1966.St. Laurent’s influence was immediate and far-reaching. Among his successes – the Mondrian collection in 1965, Le Smoking tuxedo suits of 1967 and beyond, the Safari suits of 1968 and the Russian inspired collection of 1976.The Yves Saint Laurent Encore line was a secondary label introduced in 1993 for the US market.St. Laurent retired in 2002. His couture atelier was closed, but the Rive Gauche line continued to be designed by Tom Ford, who started there in 2000. In 2004, Ford left Saint Laurent, and Ford’s assistant, Stefano Pilati was named the new creative director. In 2012 Pilati was dismissed, and Hedi Slimane was named the new designer. Also in 2012, the name of the company was changed to Saint Laurent Paris.
