A Rare Piece of American HistoryCovering the Period Just after the US Entry into WWIGeneral Leonard Wood Letter toLawrence Abbott President of the Outlook CompanyJuly 7, 1917
After President Wilson declared war on Germany on April 6, 1917, the US was thrust into a war that it was very ill prepared to support. Not only did we not have enough soldiers, they were also ill-trained and generally incapable of effectively waging a war far away from our shores.
Within Wilson\'s cabinet and his entire administration there were competing views on how to fix this issue...and to even admit the issue existed. General Leonard Wood was expected to be assigned the command of our American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) in Europe. But his leadership and support of the Preparedness Movement (which was also supported by ex-President Roosevelt along with most of major bankers, industrialists, lawyers and wealthy people of the day) cost him that job with Wood being sent into \"exile\" by sending him to run the SouthEaster Department of the military.
The Preparedness Movement was a campaign led by Wood and Roosevelt to strengthen our military. Wilson opposed it.
This amazing letter details Wood\'s beliefs and concerns about our military situation to Lawrence Abbot what was the President of the Outlook Company, publisher of a noted newspaper of the day. Lawrence\'s father was Lyman Abbot who had been expelled from the American Peace Society because of his vigorous support for the Preparedness Movement in the Outlook.
This is a 2-page letter with Wood\'s bold signature at the end. It\'s an amazing at the moment statement about what was really happening in the United States just after our entry into WWI.
A one-of-a-kind historical record and document. Very reasonable buy-it-now.
