Scarce World War I trench art knife/letter opener file-cut from artillery shell steel shrapnel. Substantial - 7\" long and nearly 3 ounces, this was a nasty piece of shrapnel that could easily have spoiled some soldier\'s day. Very fine file work to shape the blade. This was purchased in a French flea market, so most likely French or German made. Some rust stains to the blade and the tip is slightly bent. Nice piece of trench art - the steel shrapnel made knives are scarce, as filing the explosively hardened metal was a lot of work.
