Nice original authentic wartime M-1 GI helmet in honest original condition. It is hard to find good clean examples.
Steel shell is by McCord and is stamped 358B which indicates a manufacture date of around November 1942. Stainless steel rim with front seam. Fixed bale bars. Light OD webbing strap with flat stamped brass buckle consistent with late 1942 manufacture. Some minor corrosion deposit to the webbing strap from where it has been tucked up under the shell by the fixed bale bar. Shell is in really very good condition, showing light normal service wear, a minor dent to rear crown, a tiny non-structural vertical hairline to exterior at rear, and a small ding to rim at rear. Importantly, the shell has all original cork-textured paint, with really nice patina. The paint and cork is in good even condition throughout the shell. Helmet has never been cleaned, polished, oiled or waxed - check the detail images of the rim to see the honest patina.
Liner is original to this shell, and the two parts fit comfortably together. Liner is made by Westinghouse and is late war (1944) production as confirmed by blackened brass washers and headband buckle, and raw-end nape strap. Ink-stamped marking to headband are no longer legible. Leather sweatband shows actual use, and has pulled from the liner webbing atone point, as shown. Exterior retains original OD paint. Leather chinstrap is missing.
