David the back reads\"Agniss Red Halk & her Sisters, Umatilla Squaws, they have the most valuable dresses and finery of any in the tribe. Photo By Lubken, Boise Idaho\".We have three photos from Lubken, two with pencil notes on the reverse in the same hand and this reverse note makes a comment that had to have been made by someone who was present at the time the photo was taken, probably Lubken himself. Why he chose to spell her name phonetically (sort of) I have no idea but he must have heard her name spoken and wrote it down. Also, he is aware of their relative wealth. They are princesses, not\"squaws\".Agnes father was Thomas Big Owl and Agnes spent her early years with him and her family performing in Buffalo Bills Wild West Show in the 1870s. By the time this was taken she would have been in her late twenties.
We have this photo and two photos of Chief Peo from the same sitting, usingthis old albumen print process on thin paper-the same technique used for Carte de Viste and Cabinet photos (the thin paper made it necessary to mount the photos on card stock-these are NOT mounted and fragile). The negative on one of the Chiefs photos has inscriptions, one scratched on and one written-dating it to 1901. All three photos were developed using this same early process and the dates seems to work.
Here are some old photos that show their fellow Umatilla. They are dated \"circa 1900\" but at least ten years older than that date. Agnes is not included here but notice the dresses and the beaded more about the Umatilla thephotographer:Walter Lubken was a photographer born in Boise, Idaho who was hired by the Bureau of Reclamation to take pictures of the agencies engineering projects. He worked for them from 1903to1917 and traveled the west extensively, often taking pictures of Native Americans as well. Note that this photo was taken before he began that job and is dated by the photographer on the negative. We have 3 photos from him, 2 with pencil notes on the reverse in the same hand and one reverse note in pencil makes a comment that had to have been made by someone who was present at the time the photo was taken, probably Lubken Notes:Turn of the Century 8 x 6 print in remarkable condition-Printed on thin albumen process paper so it is fragile. Personal note on reverse probably Lubken, identifying Agnes. Please see PHOTOS and description.
