John Flanagan designed the Washington Head Quarter. His initials JF are on the truncation of the head.
The mint mark appears below the center of the wreath on the reverse side through 1964. The letter D signifies Denver; no letter, Philadelphia.
All Philadelphia issues and all coins from 1965 through 1967 show no mint mark, even though they were struck at Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco. Starting in 1968 the mint mark appears on the obverse near the bow. Starting in 1980 the letter P for Philadelphia was used.
Clad coinage was begun in 1965. Clad coins have a pure copper core with an outer layer of copper-nickel on both sides. Beginning in 1975, coins with dual dates 1776-1976 were issued for the Bicentennial. There were no quarters dated 1975. Quarters dated before 1965 can be collected in Washington Quarter folders Number One and Two. Quarters dated after 1987 can be collected in folder Number Four.
Below each opening is shown the quantity minted.
No coins are included.
