It is one of the premier Art Nouveau designs, featuring high relief flowers, with exquisite detail down to the stamens and pistils in the centers of the flowers. In the old pieces, the reverse of the handles is as sharp and crisp as the front.The sugar spoon is still a standard item in silver sets even though it was introduced in about 1810. Before then, sugar had been served with tongs, but changing technology had made it possible to have a sugar that was not prone to clumping. In damp weather, sugar tended to clump together, but in small enough clumps that a spoon could move it around. If that failed, the sugar could be pounded into granules with the spoon bowl, which is why so many old sugar spoons have funny marks on the bowl. Someone had used them to hack a lump of sugar. Older sugar spoons tend to be larger than modern ones; apparently people ate a lot more sugar. The older ones also tend to have scalloped sides, the better to scrape with.The sterling sugar spoon/shell offered here measures about 6”. This is not a piece of new silver. It shows the patina of as much as 110 years of careful use. There are the light scratches which constitute normal patina. There is no monogram. The bowl has a light gold wash. Silver is softly lustrous. The pattern is crisp and clear. This spoon has been carefully used and well cared for. I polish all silver before listing on .
