Mrs Virginia Slater was a notable Williamsburg lady, wife of Sgt Parkes Slater & mother of Confederate soldiers. Mrs Slater was honored by Federal officers for nursing a badly wounded Federal cavalryman during the Battle of Williamsburg (shot by a drunk Pennsylvania soldier who was executed). An original Civil War letter from Mrs Slater, at Williamsburg, Va, Oct 1, 1863 to Colonel West, requesting her daughter Virginia H Slater be allowed a pass to the Confederate lines. The reverse bears approvals signed by Colonel Robert West at HQ Fort Magruder, also by a Brigadier General & by a Federal staff officer at Yorktown. 1p 8 x 5\" ink. Age spots, Overall VG
