Woman in Amauti with Child Soapstone CarvingInuit ArtMaternal and family themes are important in Inuit art. Here is a lovely Inuit sculpture in a rich green serpentine stone that tells a simple story of family. It shows two faces, a woman in stylized billowing amauti, and a small young face lower, by her side. The child has gown too big to be carried in his mother’s amauti, but is still close to her, physically and emotionally.
Beautiful curves to the stone from all angles.
The Amauti
The amauti is the parka with wide flowing hood worn by Inuit women of the Eastern Canadian Arctic. Up until about two years of age, a child can nestle against the mother\'s back in the amaut (the built-in baby pouch just below the hood). The pouch is large and comfortable for the baby or infant. This traditional parka is designed to keep the child warm and safe from wind and cold, also helps to develop bonding between mother and child.Measurements: 4” h x 3.5 “ w x 1.5” d (10 cm x 9 cm x 4 cm)Weight : 275 gramsCondition: Excellent, nice polish. The carving has a Canada Eskimo Art “igloo tag”. Unsigned.
Please Note : The tag looks as if it was prepared in recent years (possibly a replacement). It states the carving is from \"Nunavut\", and circa 1980, both of which may be accurate. However, the formally recognized territory of Nunavut only came into existence when it separated officially from the Northwest Territories on April 1, 1999.
