Wonderful Antique French ‘I Am The True Jacob’ Clay Pipe, Early 20thC:

Here on offer is a wonderful antique French ‘I am the true Jacob’clay pipe, dating to the early 20th century, with a vintage stem and mouthpiece.

This pipe came from the Trevor Barton collection, a world renowned collector of tobaccianawho died in 2008, he had been ammasing the collection for more than fiftyyears. Trevor Barton received the rare honour of being inducted into the ‘AcademieInternationale de la Pipe’.

Thiswonderful clay pipe is in the form of an orientalist character with a bushybeard, and turban and is a copy of those made by Gambier of Paris. The turban that has a band which reads:

JE SUISLE VRAI JACOB

Thistranslates to ‘I am the true Jacob’. The eyes are glass and add real depth tothe piece. It has ‘JACOB’ on the base. It lacks the fine detail and finish that the Gambier pipe displays.

This pipe has been made using traditional techniques. Thefigurative aspect is without damage, which is rare, there is usually damage tothe beard. The stem has been fitted with a modern wooden stem and black plastic mouthpiece linked with a flexible pipe. The pipe has not been smoked. The piece displays well.

The pipe is offered good antique condition, it measures about 36cm inlength and weighs 118g.
