This large World War One lot includes more than 100 documents, and about 40 letters, as well as some photographs and postcards. This large lot originally belonged to Major Charles F. Lewis of the 307th U.S. Engineers which were part of the American Expeditionary Forces that was established on July 5, 1917 under the command of General John J. Pershing. Before the United States entered the war Mr. Charles F. Lewis of Leeds, Alabama was working for the Standard Portland Cement Company at Leeds Alabama. Apparently Lewis decided to join the Army in May of 1917 and there is a letter from the President of the Portland Cement Company dated May 14, 1917, in this letter the President of the Company thanked him, congratulated him and wished him luck. Lewis entered into the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in June of 1917 and on August 8th, 1917 Lewis was commissioned Captain of the Engineer Section Officer\'s Reserve Corps. By the end of the war Lewis would reach the rank of Major. The U.S. Engineers not only built and maintianed roads and bridges but also fought as infantry and fought well! There are several documents in this lot commending the 307th for the bravery and battle skills. These documents provide detailed descriptions of the battles including the names of specific soldiers and the part they played in the battles. Other documents include War Dept. Orders, Transportation Orders, Embarkation orders, Official Appointments, Field Orders, Supply Orders, Rosters of the names of the officers and men, Prisoner of War Escort orders, and numerous Orders from Headquarters including secret and confidential orders. There are also a few telegrams and some French Hotel receipts. All of the documents are from France and date from 1918 and 1919. Included with the documents are two interesting letters written by a Captain Shaffer to Major Lewis about some missing money. Apparently Captain Shaffer was about to be Court-Martialed and was writing to Major Lewis for help. Also included in this lot are thirty-five letters written by Charles Lewis to his girlfriend in Alabama. These letters were written when Lewis was in training from June to December 1917. In addition to the documents and letters are the pictures and postcards that are pictured above.
