Tonne was a highly decorated German Air Forcecommander, and a highlyranked German Flying Aceof WW2.
Tonne during WW2 was known as the Luftwaffe Flying Ace Commander of Fighter Squadron 53, particularly during the Battle of Britain, Operation Barbarossa, the Mediterranean Campaign and the North Africa Campaign. Tonne was credited with 122 aerial victories, including 16 with the Super Marine Spitefire He flew 641 combatmissions, and was skilled in an aerial accident on April 20, 1943 over Tunisia.
Because of his aerial combat successes, he was awarded the German Cross in Gold.
And because of his extreme personal bravery andsuccessful military leadership in combat, Tonne was awarded the Knights Cross with Oakleaves...one of only 890 soldiers to receive this high honor duing the War!
The sepia colored postcard size Heinrich Hoffmann photograph shows Tonne as a Luftwaffe Oberleutnant wearing his Knights Cross Oakleaves and other awards, and he has signed his full name with Oberleutnant rank boldly across the lower portion of the image in black fountain pen ink. The reverse side has the normal Hoffmann backstamps/hallmarks and is unused and is in very good/fine condition.
