Here’s a rare Yurok wood food pestle or pounder which datesto the mid-late 19th century. These were used to turn food such assalmon, other meats and berriesinto paste for consumption. The finial of this piecedepicts a Yurok ancestor. Good dark patina is very conspicuous on the last 2inches of the pestle and also some lighter patina all over the ancestor’shead…..The patina are in the right places, thus, indicative of much handling.

I recall seeing a piece similar to this specimen which waspurchased by a friend of mine from a tribal arts fair in San Francisco some 15odd years ago. The species of wood is Pine.

Condition issues:

Age cracks, splits and worm holes….all these defects aregood signs of old age…and one should expect to see such features on old andauthentic wooden artifacts…..Good oily dark patina/stain around the bottom areaof the pestle and lighter patina around the ancestor head finial.

Provenance:

Ex (U.S) Portland, Oregon collection for many years.
