From a Tucson estate some years ago and a well chosen bring back from some visit to the vicinity of Gallup (or perhaps purchased from one of the fabled curio shops right here in the Old Pueblo) is this delightful pair of old Zuni Pueblo mosaic inlay sun face clip earrings, construction features fully indicative of a tribal artisan making in what is now the long ago. The obviously vintage duo features mosaic inlays of green turquoise, jet, spondylus shell and MOP, the faces serrate bezeled and with twisted wire framing?an attractive choice on the part of the maker. The strong coloration of those inlays and the tastefully executed silver work add greatly to the visual charisma and that distinctly early look. That said, the pair is obviously not some recent affair - reflecting the skill of a period tribal craftsman working by strictly traditional means to satisfy trader influenced aesthetic demands and his own sense of what was right. Everything here demonstrates an older example and the hand accomplished tribal lapidary work is diagnostic of the time before power tools came to dominate Pueblo craft. The trader supplied clip fittings appear to be well preserved gold tone or gold plated. Weight is good for the form at about 10.1 grams on my portable digital scale. Condition is quite good though not absolutely perfect, with a wonderful aura of time to the silver and inlay surfaces as seen in the pics. Those inlays are all tight to their serrate bezels. The jet inlay on one earring has two tiny faint exceedingly tight fracture lines just above the MOP at extreme left and right, an exceedingly unobtrusive mention of the kind seen with a 10X loop (see pics). The other earring is missing a very small narrow sliver of jet at center, apparently an ancient loss and as worn about during the period; this will present no real visual issue on the ear, but I\'m bringing it up. The original trader supplied clips are good to go. There are otherwise just typical and expected signs of period wearing about, here simply more evidence of the vintage real thing. I\'m nitpicking for accuracy here, and a look at the pics should give a good idea of appearance and condition?a very attractive pair of old Zuni inlay earrings. Size is about 11/16 in. across. If you collect earlier 20th Century historic Southwestern tribal referenced silver adornment and especially such wearable folk artworks as this, or simply wish this single noticeable improvement to the ambiance of each day, these will have great meaning for you.
