Six Directional Zuni Fetish by JAYNE QUAM, Navajo IndianThis is six directional fetish carving by Jayne Quam. It depicts a mole with other fetishes on it; mountain lion, bear, wolf, badger, eagle with little pieces of shell bound with sinew and beads on top. Signed on bottom with her full name. Very collectible. Measures 2.5\" X 1.5\" tall X 1 .75\" wideThe mole is a dark black onyx stone. It has a bright turquoise arrow on its back. On the turquoise arrow is an argite eagle. The wolf is milky white quartz and has a shell arrow on its back, carved and notched to fit the sinew string. Below that is the light turquoise bear, also with an arrow on its back. Along the other side is the badger in pipestone, a notched arrow holding it in place on its back and a soapstone mountain lion also with a notched arrow. The mountain lion (soapstone) represents the north, the bear (turquoise) represents the west, the badger (pipestone) represents the south, the wolf (milky white quartz) represents the east, the eagle (argite) represents the upper regions, and the mole (onyx) represents the lower regions. The artist is Jayne Quam. Jayne pursues the idea of stone fetish carvings, the roots of which are pre-historicJayne Quam has let her vision develop into a beautiful, new, abstract art form.
