Zuni Theodore Edaakie Owl Bolo Dot & Mosaic Inlay TED EDAAKIE Rare 1957-1967 :
$729.00

Welcome!

I\'m offering this bolo, a well known design of Ted Edaakie, and it is a favorite design of his which I\'ve enjoyed owning before in other choices of stones. Theodore Edaakie, called Ted Edaakie, whose work is in the C.G.Wallace catalog, the Museum of The American Indian Smithsonian Institution, The Museum of New Mexico and The Heard Museum in Arizona. Edaakie has won several awards for his work. The C.G. Wallace catalog also reports the sale of two of his roadrunner pins. In the 1930\'s and 1940\'s Theodore Edaakie was employed as an artist at C. G. Wallace\'s Trading Post at Zuni.  Mosaic inlay pieces that Theodore made were collected by Wallace and several were sold at the 1975 Sotheby\'s sale of Wallace\'s collection. Indeed his owl and his roadrunner were among the pieces included in the Sotheby\'s sale. He was a superb lapidarist as well as silversmith and the stones on this bolo are superb. They look as if there were a thick enamel applied rather than the inlay of stones. This piece was in a private collection for many decades. Within this piece, there is use of a spotted cowrie shell in brown and white, which is a lovely use for the owl and jet which is also used for dot inlay in the eyes, coral and jet for the beak, and a beautiful Blue Gem Turquoise for the frame of the face area. The shells and stones are all hand cut and buffed and have three dimensionality. The cheeks are raised in a triangular shape, which gives a lot of life to the image.I\'m always impressed by his use of color which I find to be brilliant and arresting. He had a great talent for color. The silver work is also special. There is his characteristic stamp work on flattened stamped wires that frame the owl and on raindrops. The stamp work is identifiably his and his alone. The leather on the tie is in good condition and the entire piece is in excellent vintage condition. The bolo is not stamped with Ted Edaakie\'s hallmark but this is a known design that only he created and I guarantee that it is his work. I love it and I think the colors on this piece are aesthetically delightful.

Dr. Schaaf notes that Theodore Edaakie was active from the 1930\'s through the 1960\'s and that his work is in the collections of the Smithsonian, Museum of the American Indian and Santa Fe Museum of New Mexico. He was one of the most important lapidarists and silversmiths and this bolo is a rare example. It is a top quality piece. I note that while his bracelets are rarely available, one of his bracelets, indeed one of his owl bracelets recently sold for $1350 on another site and a bolo is being offered at $2850. I love his work. This bolo has great charm and is a collector\'s item and a joy to wear.

The bolo is a good size at 1-3/4\" high x 1-15/16\" wide but is distinguished by the areas of color which are so distinct and strong. It\'s a striking piece that will always get attention and be gorgeous. The tips are a good weight as they were in those days, probably original and they measure 7/8\" tall. The tie is in good enough shape to be used if the length is right for you and you don\'t want to update it or the tips. If you do, I have a resource who can create buttery soft ties that seem old but are new and can create old looking tips. But the tie and tips on this are fine. The tie measures 37\" end to end with the tips. Overall it is in excellent vintage and collectible condition. One of the cheeks seems a little short in its inlay area.  I don\'t know if it was chipped or was set that way originally. Small defects like this are clear when it\'s studied in magnification but not an issue to the eye.

This is highly collectible and a gorgeous bolo by one of the great master silversmiths in Zuni history. I have a matching pendant in my store separately at this time. Consider the two!

Attributions on many of the old pieces of Native American jewelry are sometimes a moving target. All the books have errors, so in addition to counterchecking, I have developed some expertise over the years and I do care about getting it right, so as more information comes to light I update my listings and also get in touch with my previous buyers, to inform them of any changes in attributions. I am sincerely committed to ongoing accuracy.

I am sorry to say I can no longer recommend ATADA nor buying from their members with perhaps one exception, and retract my previous endorsement of the group.

I request payment by PayPal in three days, but planned in advance of purchase, alternate payment methods and time payments can be arranged.

Everything I sell comes from my personal collection or is something that I would include in my personal collection. Most pieces are museum worthy and gallery suitable, sold to you at great pricing. I vet every item carefully for quality and condition, and offer you the best. I want you to be able to rely on me for top quality, superb items that are often unique and rare examples of old antique vintage southwest, indian, native american and fine gold and gemstones, whether you\'re starting a collection or adding to one, or want something great to wear or gift. My goal is that all my buyers are delighted, that my special pieces find the right homes.
