Welcome!

This fabulous bolo is quite large and elegant in its execution, with perfectly matching tips that dangle. This bolo features an eagle with free and fluid wings and feathers, not constrained as is more common, and a combination of realism with unusual detail design: these elements are rare. I\'m aware of three or four of the artists of that period who might have been able to do that work. Note that there are no applied raindrops and that there is a stepped design under the wings, between the wings and the body. I have seen work by Frank Vacit that has all these elements and also Leo Poblano, and Merle Edaakie\'s work meets two of these elements: I haven\'t seen pieces of his that have the stepped design, but that doesn\'t mean he didn\'t make any. I\'m leaning toward Frank Vacit in the attribution but you can make your own determination.  I\'m including copies of a few of his pieces that meet these criteria, a ketoh and a bolo that sold in an sale in January 2012. They are the third from last and next to last pictures above. Of course they aren\'t included in this listing. The ketoh shows the freedom and fluidity of the feathering and the bolo shows that as well as an included stepped design and neither uses raindrops. The form of inlay is different but the art concept is what I\'m considering.

This eagle bolo was made in the 1950s and it measures 2-1/4\" high and 2-1/2\" wide at the wing spread. The tie is soft and flexible, shows wear but it is in good condition for use, still. It measures with the tips and dangles about 40-1/2\" long end to end. The tips with the dangles measure 2-1/2\" in length and the inlay area on the dangles is 1\" x 1\" in size. The dangles\' design is just like the central bolo, which has a Bennett closure that is stamped C 31, which dates the clasp to use a period from 1957 to 1967. Could it have been a replacement for earlier wires? It could have been. I see some marks on the back but they are not definitive. There is no marking for silver content but it is at least coin silver. It is unsigned and that neither marking is there (neither for silver nor for signature), confirms the earlier age of the piece. It is made of highly reflective white mother of pearl, turquoise, jet and t-shell. There is a lighter T-shell on the legs and you can see the darker brown on the wings and torso, at certain angles. All the stones are natural and were hand cut, buffed and set. The colors are arresting. The lack of coral and spondylus is unusual, too, so there are certain departures from the traditional in this creative bolo.

This is a top quality piece by a master silversmith during the CG Wallace period. My personal thinking is that it was made by Frank Vacit, and that alternatives would be Leo Poblano and Merle Edaakie. Whoever made it was a great artist and this is a rare and stunning piece. I do have a few much smaller pieces that were probably made by the same artist and were made earlier, but nothing this large, and with matching dangling tips. I think this is a very special piece, suitable for any collection and of course, delightful to wear. It\'s a masterpiece of wearable art.
