A pencil sketch of Joe Louis made sometime before he became Heavyweight Champion in 1937. Etched to the back of a Klein Chocolate Company \"Peanut Lunch Bar\" heavy paper box. Klein Chocolate Company, of Elizabethtown, Pennsylvaniawas incorporated in 1914 and operated under that name up until about 1970 when it was bought by Mars, Inc.. Given that information and the etching\'s sub-title, FUTURE WORLD\'S CHAMPION,we feel fairly comfortable in assigning a date of circa 1936 to this piece.
The drawing appears to be initialed, \"DV\". This is undoubtedly a one-of-a-kind drawing and has a special charm that professional likenesses of Louis can\'t begin to match.
