You are offerding on a striking and very rare manuscript vellum leaf from a Book of Hours
with over 50(!) gold illuminated devices and initials!Contains
THE LITANY OF THE SAINTS
Among the saints listed are:
Sts. Luca, Barnaba, Stephane, Laurenti, Vincente, Thoma, Eutrope, Bartholomae, etcCirca 1460, France.FOURTEEN ILLUMINATED ONE-LINE INITIALS and TWENTY-SIX ILLUMINATED LINE-EXTENDERS in burnished gold on blue and
red grounds with delicate white tracery. Additional 14 lightly burnished initials in a milky gold.
THIS EQUALS OVER 54 ILLUMINATED DEVICES IN GOLD!
Contains a portion of the Litany of the Saints (first prescribed by Pope Gregory in 590 for a public Thanksgiving following a plague that ravaged Rome). The names of saints are listed with each invocation followed by the abbreviation for “ora pro nobis” (Pray for us).
15 lines of Latin text. Ruled in red with dark brown ink, in elegant gothic script. Certainly French; text in Latin script. Red ruled; the margins are enormous, the quality of the vellum is very high and has lavish, thick gold in the initials and extenders.
Page is overall great shape with a few small flaws along the binding edge, as shown, but remains a stunner with great detailing and intricacy- a truly rare and beautiful leaf.
