Description:
First published in England in 1784, Cooks 3rd Voyage was quickly re-published in Paris in 1785. Many consider the engraving quality to surpass the English edition.
Cook had visitedTahitiduring hisearlier voyage and was very familiar with the habit and customs of the native population, but this caught even Cook a bit by surprise. This event occurred at the Atehuru Marae on the west cost. The sacrifice was being made to ensure the god\'s assistance against an upcoming battle with the Mooreans.
though the scene is a bit grisly, it is also an interesting representation of the local costume, dwellings and musical instruments
