CONDITION:Very Good to Near Fine(see table below for details).Some very light age-toning and fading around edges. Tonesand colours stillnice. Light foxing to edges of mount, just creeping into bottom edge of image.Another image has been removed from the rear of the mount. CONTENTS:A rare original coloured albumen photograph showing a man carrying a portable shrine on his back in Yokamama Main Street, Japan,dating from the 1890s.

The photograph - whichis well-sized at 24.15cm x 18.75cm -shows the shrine carrier surrounded by young attendants hailing people to prayer. Through the open sliding window behind can be seen two curious pupils studying in a restaurant, with text books on the table. A sign at the top of the building states: \'No. 10, Main Street, Yokohama\').

The detail is sharp (see our enlargements below), and the photograph is finely coloured, with subtle colour embellishments added by hand. A fine example of a very well-composed and attractive photograph.
