A rare and delightful "ca. 1900 Stereoview, A Street in Old Gorgona, Panama Canal Zone #24" It measures approximately 7" x 3 1/2" (≈18 cm. X 9 cm.)
This fascinating and charming, "Stereoview #24" shows a typical typical narrow stone paved street in the old town of Gorgona, Panama. The stereoview is in excellent condition. It has a tiny bit of soiling and surface wear. And there is a little "softness in the right-hand corners from use. A previous owner used cellophane tape to attach this Stereoview to a scrapbook, and when it was removed, it damaged the back. These flaws however do not affect the beauty of the photos. Each of the two photos which make up the stereoview are clean, crisp and stunning. They are of sharp focus, the contrast is strong and the tonality rich and colorful. (Please see all the photos.)
This stereoview is obviously part of a series, because it is labeled and numbered. That was very common in the day. But there are no marks to tell which series it came from.
Although the research into 3D viewers and photos started back in the first part of the 1800's, the real heyday of the "modern" stereoview started when stereo-cameras became readily available to amateur photographers in the late 1800's. And their popularity continued to the middle of the 1900's. It is thanks to these photographers, that we can take a 3-D look into another time … In this case we get to see the citizens of Gorgona, Panama.
A very rare and wonderful, "ca. 1900 Stereoview #24 Street in Old Gorgona, Panama Canal Zone", and a great addition to any collection!!
