(Click to Enlarge) Description The letter is datelined Camp of the 161st NY Vol, Memphis, Tn, Dec 2, 1864. The solder, a Pvt Philp is writing his father in Altay, NY. He says \" You will see by this that we have again moved southward. I am not sorry as I knows of for it is a good deal warmer here then at Columbus (KY). but the worst of it was that we had to leave our good quarters and again and rebuild . We got here the 30th and now all or nearly all have good tents as we all went to the different saw mills and purchased ......\" I hope we will stay here now as we have got all fixed up again. There is quite a good many troops here but they are all under marching ordrs to be ready to leave after the 4th of this month . I believe to go to Nashville, Tenn, to reinforce General Thomas. I hope our luch has changed after so long a time. \" \' We got pay again, I expressed $50 to Clark & Jackson yesterday. $40 to be credited to me and $10 I make a present to you in time of need. \" Some more talk about money and then he had to sign off.
