Clifton G. Webb is a renowned African American sculptor recognized for his expressive approach to the human figure and his engagement with modernist and brutalist sculptural language. Working primarily in bronze, Webb explored themes of inner strength, movement, and emotional presence through elongated forms, textured surfaces, and simplified anatomy. His work reflects the influence of mid-20th-century modern sculpture, blending abstraction with figurative tradition.

Webb’s sculptural style emphasizes physicality and gesture, allowing the material itself to convey mood and meaning. His figures often possess a quiet intensity — contemplative, grounded, and deeply human — aligning his work with the broader lineage of modern figurative sculptors who sought to express psychological depth rather than literal realism.

Associated with the tradition of African American modern sculpture, Webb’s work contributes to the vital legacy of Black artists who expanded representation and expressive freedom within 20th-century American art.

Webb’s work is included in the permanent collections of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, the New Orleans Museum of Art, and Dooky Chase Resturant. He has also exhibited at the Stella Jones Gallery, the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum, the African American Museum of Dallas, the Chattanooga Museum of Afro-American Culture and History, the Alternatives Museum, the Atlanta Arts Festival, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, the Arthur Roger Gallery, and the Max Hutchinson Gallery in New York. He is also an arts educator with a BFA and an MFA in sculpture from Louisiana State University.
