1940 Gum Inc. Superman Graded Partial Set (48). The first card set to feature Superman, dating from 1940, was produced by Gum Inc., the company that later became Bowman. This eighty-year old set still maintains high demand; indeed, it is one of the most popular non-sports sets of all. Its checklist features seventy-two cards and the final twenty-four cards are considered to be short prints. The cards feature color fronts that might depict "The Man of Steel" saving a damsel in distress or putting out a fire. The reverse sides of the cards have a brief synopsis of the action, as well as an advertisement for Superman Gum, the product for which these cards were created. This lot includes a partial set of forty-eight cards, all of which have been graded.
