This is an original 1789 PresidentGeorge Washington Indian Peace Medal. It’s heavy and large and made of puresilver. This medal was hand engraved and made in the United States ofAmerica in 1789 by a skilled silversmith/craftsman. The dimensions are: 2 and15/16 inches from left to right and from top to bottom. The height of the medalis 3/16 of an inch. There is a hole punched through the top of the medal whichwould have been for a Native American chief to put a rope/ribbon through sothat they could wear the medal suspended from the neck. This is a very largemedal, as reserved to be gifted by the US government to the most importantNative American chiefs. On obverse: an image of President George Washington andthe date “1789” and: “George Washington President of the United States”. On thereverse: an image of a Native American hand and an American hand (with anofficer’s ornate sleeve cuff) shaking hands, an image of a peace pipe and ahatchet crossed like swords, and the phrase: “Peace and Friendship”. I’veresearched these medals and read that for the original Indian Peace Medalscommissioned by the US government in 1789 the medals were not stamped butinstead were engraved by expert silversmiths/engravers out of pure silver. Thatmeans each peace medal from that year were individual works of art andhandcrafted. That increases the value and the collectability because of theartistry and effort that went into producing these medals.

I purchased thispeace medal from an expert NativeAmerican item collector (who also collected and sold other early American history items) who was also a dealer who sold Native American items (and other early American history items). The person who sold this item to me wrote books on NativeAmericans so is an expert on Native Americans. Theexpert collector/dealer/author who sold this to me noted on item description for this item that this is an original 1789 President George Washington Indian Peace Medal. Even later restrikes ofthis type of medal (in bronze) from the late 19th Century or early 20th Centurysell for thousands of dollars so this original 1789 medal has a far greatervalue. The medal has an excellent patina which is understandable given the ageof the medal. The medal is extremely heavy for its size and is madeof pure silver. A President George Washington Indian peace medal recently sold at sale for $630,000.
