Good evening, don't get crushed and have fun if you can. To you from the heart. George. If you don’t want to go, have Mauritius tell you to go walking. »
Died in St. Helena on May 5, 1821, Napoleon was buried on the British Isle where his remains lay for nineteen years. The Emperor had asked, in a codicil written on April 16, 1821, to rest in the land of France. It was in 1840 that King Louis-Philippe obtained England’s restitution of his body.
On December 15, 1840, a freezing cold reigned over Paris. Thousands of French people nevertheless flock around the Avenue des Champs-Élysées to house the monumental funeral chariot more than ten meters high that leads the fallen Emperor to his last home."" The procession, amid incredible popular enthusiasm, slowly descends the world’s most beautiful avenue. The bells ring, the drums go wild, the cannon thunders, cries burst from the crowd: "Long live the Emperor!" ”.
The chariot, harnessed to sixteen horses and followed by veterans of the Republic’s and Empire’s armies, crosses the Arc de Triomphe. It takes several hours for the procession to reach Les Invalides.
The coffin, surrounded by Austerlitz’s Flags, is carried inside the chapel where hundreds of thousands of people will come, in the following days, to gather in front of the coffin bearing Charlemagne’s imperial crown and Caesar’s golden laurel tiara.
Victor Hugo left a very nice report of this memorial day in Things seen : "Lafayette is forgotten, while Napoleon is still alive. Lafayette was just a date."" Napoleon is a genius. »
Hugo followed the course of the procession, outside, in a cold of -14º. We don’t know if Delacroix accepted George Sand’s invitation and attended this ceremony.
