Offered here is an impressive and substantial terracotta head from the ancient Nok artistic tradition of present-day Nigeria, dating approximately 900 BC to 200 AD.

The Nok tradition represents one of the earliest and most sophisticated sculptural movements in sub-Saharan Africa. Defined largely through its remarkable terracotta works, Nok sculpture stands apart for its technical refinement and highly formalized aesthetic language.

This example is a large, isolated ceramic head measuring 9 ½ inches (24.1 cm) in height. The face is presented with strong classical features: high, straight brows above triangular eyes with drilled pupils; a high domed forehead; and a distinctive trilobate nose with clearly articulated septum and nostrils. The lips are fine and slightly flared, lending the face a composed yet expressive presence.

The hairstyle is particularly notable — composed of distinct clustered bunches with an unusual inverted fringe rising to meet the body of the hair at the nape. The separated brows and drilled eyes distinguish this head from the Sokoto substyle, while the overall proportions align most closely with the Classical Jemaa style, one of the most recognized stylistic groups within the Nok sculptural corpus.

Nok terracottas are celebrated for their unusual construction methods, combining coiled building techniques with subtractive carving to achieve both naturalistic and stylized expression.
