Note for collectors:
As I’ve already mentioned elsewhere, in general terms, I don’t agree with the inclusion into the Great Characters series of models like Beatles, Kennedy, Warhol or James Dean. I mean, this Great Characters family is still one of my favorite (the early ones are definitely cool, especially Einstein and Leonardo) but I think it is now too heterogeneous (from Gandhi to Elvis Presley and more recently Enzo Ferrari and even Bruce Lee!). Sadly marketing is the king in the actual juncture. Leaving my criticism aside, I must say that the two-year period 2013-2014 stands out as particularly memorable for the MB production with several masterpieces made by the Artisan dept. in Hamburg (Confucius LE88, Einstein LE99, Genghis Khan LE88, Leonardo da Vinci 74).
The fact remains that the Montblanc Great Characters Serie is one of the most appreciated and successful in recent years. Many top MB Collectors decided to invest on this specific series (both regular and Artisan) making it the central point of their Collection.
In this respect I have always held a deep admiration for the MB Leonardo Da Vinci model, particularly the LE 74 version (of which approximately 10% of the total production has passed through my hands).
The MB Skeleton Leonardo da Vinci LE74 is a milestone for any discerning MB Artisan Collector. It could not be otherwise when a big name of the history of mankind meets a fully skeletonised design with a terrific combination of rose gold and ruthenium. This model combines a remarkable mixture of technical solutions (the mirror under the top cap, the rolling clip just to name a few) without compromising on the general harmony of the design.
For this reason, as a dealer I have long aspired to own the LE3 Leonardo da Vinci. Today, after more than a decade, I am delighted to present, for the first time on the secondary market, the elusive lapis lazuli variant of this masterpiece.
Now, I would like to share with you a little-known anecdote that will help better appreciate the importance and rarity of the model offered for sale here.
Few people know that, during the launch event of the Leonardo da Vinci edition in Italy at the Castello Sforzesco in Milan, Montblanc announced its intention to pay tribute, beyond the regular edition (LE 3000) and the Artisan version (LE 74), to three of Leonardo’s many talents, through three one-of-a-kind pieces.
The most aggressive Montblanc collector at the time immediately declared his intention to acquire all three 1/1 pieces (much could be said about this individual, but that is another story…).
All the other guests, including many top-notch Montblanc collectors, were understandably disappointed, so the brand decided to produce three pieces of each, resulting in a total of nine, to satisfy the demand.
And this was the background that led to the creation of this elusive micro-series:
