David Roy was born March 16, 1965 to the village of Moenkopi near Tuba City, Arizona. He is self-taught and looks at his own anatomy in order to understand the body structure of the Kachina carvings. He has been carving since he was in high school and, after graduating, he worked for the Hopi Tribe. At first, he used feathers and leather, but when he began all-wood carving, he found that he liked it and wanted to learn more about it.

David Roy is often mentioned alongside his brothers, Coolidge Roy Jr. and Silas Roy, who are also noted for their Kachina doll carvings.

The Comanche Kachina (also known as Komantsi or Tutumsi) is a traditional Hopi carved figure that honors the power and presence of the Comanche. Comanche pays tribute to the Comanche warrior and his powerful presence. The Comanche were taught how to dry farm by the Hopi. In exchange, the Comanche gave the Hopi their dances and songs in order to call for the rain to come and nourish the earth. In honor of these warriors the Hopi created this Kachina. He appears at the Mixed Dances. The Comanche is a powerful and feared warrior.
