Tad is not yet breeched. In the not too far back past. They wouldn’t dress the boys as boys until they reached a certain age or ability. So often you see boys dressed in seemingly girl like clothes. Ease of changing is obvious reason.
Antique photography is prone to distortions. As in this portrait there is distortion in Abrahams face most likely due to the restlessness of his child causing him to move. His child side eye seems to be larger than normal. Looking past this defect we are granted the rare authentic smile of Abraham Lincoln; often described in writing but seen in only a few photographs.
