ABOUT THE WORKThis artwork is, as if it were, both painting and calligraphy.
The power garnered in the bent over body erupts in a stream of pitch-black brush strokes. The silhouette of this painting looks in one section like part of a circle and in another a triangle. There also appear to be a symbol resembling a brushed kanji character. This painting may be a homage to the famous Zen calligraphic work known as "〇△□” [Circle-Triangle-Square known as The Universe], painted by Sengai Gibon (1750-1837) during the Edo period (1603–1867).
The scene is from the climax of the Arrancar arc of BLEACH. Ichigo Kurosaki becomes one with the Zanpakuto Getsuga, or Moon Fang. His body, neck, and mouth are covered with blue bandages, a blade extends from his right arm, and his black hair is long. His eyes are red, silent and reveal a hint of melancholy.
In order to fight Aizen, Ichigo performs a Jinzen meditation and communicates with the Getsuga. Is he inside the sword, inside his own consciousness, or inside space-time itself? He fights against Tensa Zangetsu in a place that resembles somewhere deep underwater, and he masters power as if he has just achieved enlightenment. There is a Zen Buddhist saying, "If you meet the Buddha, kill the Buddha." It means that there is something to be gained only by abandoning all attachments, everything you have ever believed. Ichigo returns from his inner battle and stands on a different horizon.
Nine printings were made to deliver the multi-layered black ink color and delicate line quality that resemble a single brush stroke onto Japanese washi paper. Enlarged from the original size and printed on large-format Mino paper using collotype printing, the work not only has a dynamic impact on the viewer, but also has long-term preservation qualities.
The artwork features seals that were designed by and added under the supervision of Tite Kubo. On the top right is an inshuin seal that reads "BLEACH." In the left corner, there is a hakubunin seal with Tite Kubo's name in Japanese on the top, and the bottom seal features his name in Roman alphabet as a gagoin seal. The work is also signed by the artist.Notes on product
