This is one of a kind find: 1888 coronation cup of Frederick III also know as Friedrich Wilhelm Nikolaus Karl.Frederick III was crowned after the death of his father German Emperor Wilhelm I in 1888 and remain on the throne for 99 days, between March and June, during the year of the Three Emperors.The cup, the remainder of his short reign is primarily gold and white with a small black accent. It is designed in neo classical style: the handle of the cup is a Roman god Mercury holding a black shield. Known to be as one of the smartest Olympian gods. One side of the cup shows a male figure with a bull: in Roman mythology the bull expresses power, leadership, virility and potency as a force of nature. The opposite side of the cup shows a female holding a lion by it’s mane- clear symbol strength, sovereignty and justice. Placed between both figures is a miniature of a new Emperor, kept tastefully in black and white. The gold background is decorated very richly, attention to details is on a highest level. The cup measures approx. 4 inches tall x 3.25 inch ( without the handle), 5 inches (with the handle) x 2.5 inch base.The bottom of the cup is marked with the manufacturers initials: KPM with the symbol of the Sovereign’s Orb- a globe surmounted by a cross. The cup is in a very good condition, but there is one small chip on the bottom of the base- please see the pictures; Hardly noticeable when the cup is standing up right.Please contact us with any questions regarding the item.
