No. 28 was built in Cardiff in 1897 for hauling coal down from the Valleys' pits to the ports. However, in 1922, the Taff Vale Railway was amalgamated into the Great Western Railway (with No. 28 becoming GWR No. 450). The GWR preferred to use its own 0-6-2T locomotives for the pit work, so most of the TVR locomotives were scrapped - but No. 450 was sold to the War Department and was named "Gordon" and renumbered WD205 on the Longmoor Military Railway. In 1947, "she" was again sold, this time to the National Coal Board and worked at South Hetton Colliery until 1960. When it was realised that she was the last Welsh-built locomotive still running, she was preserved. Currently, No. 28 is in the very safe hands of the Dean Forest Railway Society undergoing restoration.
