Note for collectors:

As I see it, here we have a rare convergence and alignment of multiple factors that amplify one another, resulting in what I do not hesitate to call a museum-worthy piece.

On one side Montblanc is the pen brand par excellence, a pride of German craftsmanship. On the other hand, we have the seminal artist of the nineteenth-century German Romanticism, an artist who embodied the spirit of his time, Caspar David Friedrich.

All of this is elevated by the uniqueness of a one-of-a-kind piece (LE1), the hidden dream of every collector.

As experienced collectors already know, way before the Montblanc Masters of Art (MoA) was inaugurated in 2023 (shortly after having unfortunately brought the Patrons of Art Series to an end), the Montblanc Artisan dept. had already honored multiple painters and sculptors (including Caspar David Friedrich). I’m listing here only a few, to help grasp the vastness of the subject at hand and to simultaneously highlight the brand’s lack of systematic approach (I recognise this isn’t the ideal setting to share my criticism in this regard but I couldn’t restrain myself):

Excerpt from the accompanying booklet:

"Friedrich! The only landscape painter so far to succeedin stirring up all the forces of my soul, the painter who has created a new genre:THE TRAGEDY OF THE LANDSCAPE."

(David d'Angers, French sculptor, on visiting Friedrich in Dresden)

CASPAR DAVID FRIEDRICH - GODFATHER OF EARLY GERMAN ROMANTICISM.

Before Caspar David Friedrich began his art studies at the young age of 16, he was already taking drawing lessons with the university art teacher Johann Gottfried Quistorp, who awoke his protégé's love for the beauty of local nature - thus paving the way for one of the greatest painters of the Romantic era. During Friedrich's travels and hikes, he sketched his naturalistic impressions which he used as a reference for famous works such as "Wanderer above the sea of fog" or "Chalk cliffs on Rügen": unique landscapes, with fascinating intense images which are as realistic as they are dreamy and full of melancholy and gracefulness. His painting style was not based on exact images of landscapes but on imaginary views - ideal and dreamy - uniting detailed realism and abstract composition. A legacy which has been honoured with numerous exhibitions in cities such as London, New York and Saint Petersburg.

IN HONOUR OF A VIRTUOSO OF PAINTING:

THE LIMITED EDITION CASPAR DAVID FRIEDRICH 1/1 WHITE NIGHTS

The largest collection of Friedrich's fascinating works is found outside of Germany in the State Hermitage in Saint Petersburg - the city famous for its "White Nights", a period from May to July, when the sun never fully sets and the sky is filled with a silvery shimmer. This unique natural spectacle is celebrated with many events, especially the "White Nights Festival".

Launched on the occasion of this cultural event in 2011, the Limited Edition Caspar David Friedrich 1/1 White Nights was created from 750 solid white gold and pays a compelling tribute to its namesake: the expert cut of white agate on the cap symbolises the stunning depth of Friedrich's paintings. The white borders of the fine lacquer inlay on the barrel are reminiscent of Gothic architecture, a recurring motif in several of Friedrich's works. The rhodium-plated 18 K gold nib is finished with the delicately engraved detail from the painting "Wanderer above the sea of fog".

Diamonds crown the rings, the clip and the Montblanc emblem, and complete this precious edition, which brings to life all the enchantment of the early romantic works of its namesake - and is limited worldwide to only 1 piece.
