It brings no small relief when I consider that we shouldn't be so amazed by the tremendous, virtually endless expanse of the universe, but rather by how small we humans are, how small our tiny planet Earth is.

Johannes Kepler was the first person to move away from astrology and approach the sky in a scientific way. He figured out, that our planet turns around the sun, and not the opposite, that the orbit is following an elliptic pattern and that our solar system is part of a greater galaxy – the milky way. Pede Serpentarii means Ophiuchus's foot, which comes from his book De Stella nova in pede Serpentarii.

This oversized white gold pen sports a blue lacquer cap and barrel decorated with three-dimensional engraving of the Ophiuchus and Sagittarius constellations based on an illustration appearing in Kepler’s groundbreaking book De Stella Nova in Pede Serpentarii, which detailed his observations pertaining to the supernova of 1604.

Further astronomical allusions include the pen’s telescope-like silhouette, three rings on the cap (one of which is set with pave diamonds) representing the scientist’s three laws of planetary motion, and a colored opal on the cap’s top representing a supernova.

The concerned pen has never been used nor inked. Still with plastic film around the section. Full set configuration, all original boxes and papers (duly stamped) are included.

Technical Features:

Cap: The Australian fire opal ball (~5,89 ct.) in the cap is inspired by the supernova 1904, which was first observed and published by Kepler in De Stella Nova.
Cap top: The three rings at the cap top are inspired by Kepler's 3 laws of planetary motion.
Clip: The clip is symbolizing the tool which Kepler used to measure and observe in the observational astronomy, enriched with two blue sapphires (~0,13 ct.). Johannes Kepler invented the Keplerian telescope when he was 39. The overall design and shape is inspired by the Keplerian astronomical telescope (Refracting telescope).
Overall design: The decoration on the forepart is inspired by the drawing of Kepler featuring his concept of gravity of the sun, from the book Epitome Astronomiae Copernicanae (1617 to 1621). The cap and barrel are made of white gold, lacquer, 3D hand-engraved under lacquer, and set with 122 diamonds (~0,55 ct.). The hand-engravings under the lacquer of the barrel and cap are inspired by the Ophiuchus constellation and Sagittarius constellation in Kepler’s book De Stella Nova.
Cone: The fine lacquered engraving on bottom of cone is inspired by Platonic solid model of the Solar system from Mysterium Cosmographicum (1596).
Nib: The Au750 white gold nib (#9 size) is enriched with a round sapphire and with a fine engraving inspired by Kepler’s drawing of conjunction of Saturn, Jupiter and Supernova 1604 from book De Stella Nova.

Johannes Kepler: founder of modern astrophysics

Johannes Kepler, who discovered the laws of planetary motion, laid the cornerstone for the development of modern astronomy. Born in 1571 in Weil near Stutgart, he was a mathematician, astronomer, astrologer,

opician and theologian, But more imporand, he was a fre spirie and lateral thinker, as wel as a scientie

revolutionary. Instead of simply describing the phenomena of the heavens, he was the first to define the inherent correlations between mathematical and experimental research. Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking would later build on the foundations of his mathematical equations. Montblanc dedicates the ligh Artistry Homage to Johannes Kepler Limited Edition to the pioneering Johannes Kepler.

Kepler's Mysterium Cosmographicum

Convinced that planetary movements are predictable and calculable, Johannes Kepler spent years studying the motions of all the heavenly bodies. He strove to prove Copernicus's theory that the Sun, rather than the Earth, is the centre of the solar system. Kepler's first major treatise, the Mysterium Cosmographicum, published in 1596, established his reputation as a brilliant mathematician and brought him great recognition. The unusual silhouette of the Au 750 white gold Limited Edition was inspired by the Kepler telescope. In reference to Kepler's first work, one of the five Platonic solids is engraved on the cap ring. Elaborate, three-dimensional hand engravings beneath lacquer depict the constellations Ophiuchus and Sagittarius from Kepler's De Stella Nova. The edition is further refined by diamonds set into the lacquer, bringing to mind a starry night sky.

From circle to ellipse

In 1601 when Johannes Kepler succeeded Tycho Brahes as the imperial mathematician in the court of Emperor Rudolf Il in Prague, he also took possession of Brahes's observation data. This allowed him to find a mathematical system to explain the puzzling orbit of Mars. Johannes Kepler recognised that Mars and the other planets do not move in circles, but in elliptical orbits. He published his groundbreaking discoveries about the planetary movements in 1609 in Astronomia Nova. This is the source of his drawings of the elliptical movement of Mars

- the inspiration for the engraving on the cone of the Limited Edition. A further engraving inspired by Kepler's model of the solar system from his Mysterium Cosmographicum decorates the bottom of the cone.

Kepler's supernova

There are records from 1604 of an unusually bright star visible in the firmament. It was a supernova roughly 20,000 light years away that could be seen simultaneously in Europe, China and Korea. Johannes Kepler researched this event so thoroughly that it was later given his name. He published his comprehensive investigations in the treatise De Stella Nova in Pede Serpentarii ("On the new star in Ophiuchus's foot"), as the supernova was located at Ophiuchus's foot in Kepler's drawing. A uniquely coloured opal in the cap top brings to mind the supernova first described in Kepler's treatise. The drafting compass used by Kepler inspired the unusual design of the clip, which is adorned with a princess cut sapphire.

Kepler's laws

Kepler's book Astronomia Nova opened up completely new dimensions in the science of astronomy. His three planetary laws laid the foundations for modern astronomy. According to the first law, the planets move in an ellipse around the sun, which is not in the centre, but in one of the foci. The second law states that the planets orbit with a greater speed when their distance to the sun is less - and vice versa. Nine years later, Kepler arrived at his third law, which states that a planetary orbit is defined by the relationship between orbital period and diameter. The three rings of the cap top of this Limited Edition, one of which is pavé-set with diamonds, symbolise these three laws. The discovery described by Kepler in De Stella Nova of the conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter is immortalised on the handcrafted rhodium-coated Au 750 gold nib, set with a sapphire.

The inspiration for the engraving on the forepart is Kepler's depiction of the gravitational pull of the sun on the other planets.
