A highly distinctive pre-Columbian Mississippian pottery vessel with an integral reptile or lizard-form effigy.

The vessel has a broad globular body with a sculptural creature modeled around the neck and shoulder. The animal features an elongated curved body, modeled head and limbs, and numerous deliberate punctures along its back and body that appear to represent textured skin, spotting, or scales.

Unlike a simple applied handle, the effigy is structurally incorporated into the vessel and forms a prominent arched element beside the opening. The unusual zoomorphic treatment gives the piece strong visual and ethnographic interest.

The surface is hand-burnished and varies from reddish-brown to deep brown and black from firing conditions. Natural abrasions, deposits, surface wear, and irregularities remain visible throughout.

Reptilian and amphibious imagery appears throughout Mississippian material culture and is often associated with powerful earth, water, and Lower World symbolism. This example is conservatively described as a reptile, lizard, or salamander-form effigy rather than assigning it to a specific mythological being.

Likely Mississippian, approximately AD 1200–1500.
