Masterfully carved in cedar and finished with a restrained polychrome palette, this impressive work draws inspiration from the traditional halibut hooks of the Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest while reflecting Jensen's unmistakable sculptural style. Rather than simply reproducing a historic fishing implement, Jensen transforms the classic form into a dynamic three-dimensional composition featuring a central seated human figure surrounded by stylized zoomorphic forms, flowing Northwest Coast formline elements, and deeply sculpted relief carving. Original cedar bark lashings and approximately 25 inches of braided line complete the presentation, resulting in a work that is equally striking displayed on a wall or appreciated as sculpture in the round.

Scott Jensen began carving Northwest Coast art in 1972 and devoted decades to studying the art, symbolism, and traditions of the Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest. He later became an accomplished instructor, teaching carving and traditional tool making throughout Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska. His work brought him to communities across Southeast Alaska, where he developed lasting relationships within the Native carving community. In 2010, he and his wife were formally adopted into a Tlingit family by Fred Sał kaa and Ivy Gunalshowaxeex Fulmer in recognition of decades of friendship, cultural respect, and artistic dedication. Today, Jensen's carvings remain in numerous important private, corporate, and museum collections, with comparatively few examples appearing on the secondary market.

This sculpture was acquired directly from Seattle's renowned Stonington Gallery in December 1997, at the same time as the monumental Scott Jensen cedar totem pole that I also currently have listed for sale.

The sculpture measures approximately 11.5 inches long, 6.5 inches high, and 2 inches wide, retaining approximately 25 inches of its original braided line. Condition is excellent overall with only light, honest wear consistent with careful display over the past quarter century. The carving is signed and dated "SJ 98."
