BIO: Hiroo Onoda (Deceaed) WWII Imperial Japanese Army 1941-1974. Japanese holdout in the Philippine jungle. Trained as an intelligence officer ordered to take guerilla tactics including destroying airstrip, harbor, or any other actives that would impede Allied forces on the island. Ordered under no circumstances was he to surrender. Landed on Lubang Island seventy five miles southwest of Manila on December 26th, 1944. Following Japans surrender the Allied forces and Philippine natives dropped several leaflets, newspaper articles, and letters informing Onoda that WWII was over. Onoda discounted the info as Allied propaganda and continued to carryout his orders of guerilla activities for close to thirty years. On March 9th, 1974 Onoda’s former commanding officer Major Taniguchi returned to Lubang to inform him that the war had ended and ordered him to lay down his arms at which time Onoda surrendered his uniform, sword, Arisaka Type 99 rifle (in operating condition), 500 rounds of ammunition, and several hand grenades. Onoda later published an autobiography “No Surrender: My Thirty-Year War”
