Beautiful letter from Eugène Delacroix, addressed to his pupil Maurice Sand, son of the novelist, about his painting "The Education of the Virgin":
“Dear Maurice, the gilder came a while ago to try on the border of the Sainte-Anne which was still only in the state of carpentry. He was wrong about the dimensions and will redo it. Since he's doing it again we can make it more sortable by having him [sic] remove the work which is back on the sides and quite useless for the effect and having [sic] add some embellishments. Tell him as soon as possible to suspend until further information and come as soon as you can talk to me. I kiss you. Uh. Delacroix”. He adds in PS “Shout your name through the door when you come to the workshop”.
Delacroix realized The Education of the Virgin in 1842, during a stay in Nohant, in the Berry property of his friend George Sand. During these days, he wrote to his friend Jean-Baptiste Pierret, "[...] I am going to have fun with the son of the house to undertake a small painting for the local church [...]". He therefore painted a Sainte-Anne for the parish. Ultimately, Delacroix offered his canvas to George Sand (it is now in the National Eugène Delacroix Museum) and it is Maurice Sand's copy that will be hung on the altar of the village church.
