Abraham Lincoln[b](February 12, 1809 – April15, 1865) was the 16th president of the United States,serving from 1861 until his assassination in 1865. Heled the United States through the American CivilWar, defeating the Confederacy and playing a majorrole in the abolition of slavery.Born in a one-room log cabin in Kentucky, Lincolnwas raised on the frontier. He was self-educated andbecame a lawyer, Illinois state legislator, and U.S.representative. Angered by the Kansas–NebraskaAct of 1854, which opened the territories to slavery,he became a leader of the new Republican Party. Hereached a national audience in the 1858 Senatecampaign debates against Stephen A. Douglas.Lincoln won the 1860 presidential election,becoming the first Republican president. His victoryprompted a majority of the slave states to beginseceding and form the Confederate States. A monthafter Lincoln assumed the presidency, Confederateforces attacked Fort Sumter, starting the Civil War.As a moderate Republican, Lincoln had to navigateconflicting political opinions from contentiousfactions during the war effort. He closely supervisedthe Union's strategy and tactics, including theselection of generals and the implementation of anaval blockade of Southern ports. On January 1, 1863, he issued theEmancipation Proclamation, which declared theslaves in the states "in rebellion" to be free. OnNovember 19, 1863, he delivered the GettysburgAddress, which became one of the most famousspeeches in American history. He promoted theThirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution,which, in 1865, abolished chattel slavery. Followinghis re-election in 1864, he sought to heal the wartorn nation through Reconstruction
