Confucius (c. 551 – c. 479 BCE), born Kong Qiu,was a Chinese philosopher of the Spring and Autumnperiod who is traditionally considered the paragon ofChinese sages. Much of the shared cultural heritageof the Sinosphere originates in the philosophy andteachings of Confucius.[1] His philosophicalteachings, called Confucianism, emphasizedpersonal and governmental morality, harmonioussocial relationships, righteousness, kindness,sincerity, and a ruler's responsibilities to lead byvirtue.[2]Confucius considered himself a transmitter for thevalues of earlier periods which he claimed had beenabandoned in his time. He advocated for filial piety,endorsing strong family loyalty, ancestor veneration,and the respect of elders by their children and ofhusbands by their wives. Confucius recommended arobust family unit as the cornerstone for an idealgovernment. He championed the Silver Rule, or anegative form of the Golden Rule, advising, "Do notdo unto others what you do not want done toyourself."[3]The time of Confucius's life saw a rich diversity ofthought, and was a formative period in China'sintellectual history. His ideas gained in prominenceduring the Warring States period, but experiencedsetback immediately following the Qin conquest.Under Emperor Wu of Han, Confucius's ideasreceived official sanction, with affiliated worksbecoming mandatory readings for career pathsleading to officialdom. During the Tang and Songdynasties, Confucianism developed into a systemknown in the West as Neo-Confucianism. In the 20thcentury, an intellectual movement emerged in theRepublic of China that sought to apply Confucianideology in a modern context, known as NewConfucianism. From ancient dynasties to the modernera, Confucianism has integrated into the Chinesesocial fabric and way of life.[4]
